The recession was particularly hard for me as a college student. My current part-time job as a waitress weren’t enough to make ends meet. So my roommate and I decided that we should apply for another one. We didn’t have any particular skills that we could use. I could type pretty fast and my friend was good with computers, but we couldn’t find jobs that were suitable for our skills. There were either no openings or they were looking full-timers. One Saturday we were strolling around a street that was lined with thrift and secondhand shops and an idea struck me. Why don’t we hunt for cheap stuff that we could resell over the internet? My friend was a bit doubtful at first, but we decided there was no harm in it. We scoured the shops and found nice cheap furniture and other bric a brac that would look good if they were refurbished. Since my friend was good with computers, we agreed that we should have a website to advertise our wares. Using a website called Wix, a flash website builder, she was able to create a cool-looking site that featured our items. The business was slow-going at first. We started by sending out flyers all over the campus with our URL and contact information. Furniture was expensive, and we knew that there would be people like us who were out looking for a bargain. Today, I’m proud to say that our business is going strong and we’ve been getting a lot of buyers for our refurbished items.
